Furniture, Fabrics & Accessories

Furniture, area rugs, lighting and upholstery fabrics, hand-selected from distributors around the world and brought in when it is not on the floor.

Chapter 01

The last ten percent that makes a room read finished

A room can have the right floor, the right counters and a good paint color and still feel like a showroom nobody lives in. What is missing is usually furniture at the right scale, a rug that anchors the seating, lighting at more than one height and a few accessories with some weight to them.

M.B. Designs lists furniture and accessorizing for residential and commercial spaces among the things it does, next to material selection and installation. The showroom carries furniture, accessories and lighting alongside area rugs, so those decisions are made in the same building as the flooring and window treatments.

Fabric by touch, and the six chairs

Fabric is the choice that photographs worst. Weight, hand and wear only show up when you hold a sample. One client, Kim Brewer, described how the studio handled it for her: a designer pulled out sample catalogs and pointed out the durability of each fabric before anything was chosen.

Melissa then connected her with Donna, the fabric specialist, and after two visits they had found the fabric for six chairs. The studio connected her with an upholsterer from there. She wrote that when she came in to pick the chairs up, they looked like a piece of art.

That sequence is the service: a specialist for the fabric, a trade for the upholstery, and one place that keeps both conversations moving.

Chapter 03

Sourcing from distributors around the world

The studio's own wording is that at M.B. Designs you can experience materials and hand-selected products from the most unique distributors around the world. Nothing in that line asks you to settle for what happens to be on the floor in Yakima.

If you do not see what you are looking for on your first visit, they say they will bring it in. The showroom is 8,500 square feet inside the Historic McIlvanie Machine Works building, open by appointment Monday to Thursday, 7:30 AM to 5:00 PM.

“Helping me by pulling out Sample catalogs and pointing out the durability of each fabric. The owner Melissa connected me with Donna and after only two visits between her and I we found the perfect fabric for our six chairs. They then connected me with the upholster. When I went in this week to pick up the chairs they looked like a piece of art.”
